"Lebanese Security” Is the Pretext for the Naval Babel around Lebanon’s Shores?
The extraordinary buildup of European naval and military strength in and around Lebanon’s shores is way out of proportion for the task the European contingents of expanded UNIFIL have undertaken: to create a buffer between Israel and Hizballah.
Close investigation by DEBKAfile’s military and intelligence sources discloses that “Lebanese security” and peacemaking is not the object of the exercise. It is linked to the general anticipation of a military clash between the United States and Israel, on one side, and Iran and possibly Syria on the other, some time from now until November
This expectation has brought together the greatest sea and air armada Europe has ever assembled at any point on earth since World War II: two carriers with 75 fighter-bombers, spy planes and helicopters on their decks; 15 warships of various types – 7 French, 5 Italian, 2-3 Green, 3-5 German, and five American; thousands of Marines – French, Italian and German, as well as 1,800 US Marines.
It is improbably billed as support for a mere 7,000 European soldiers who are deployed in Lebanon to prevent the dwindling Israeli force of 4-5,000 soldiers and some 15-16,000 Hizballah militiamen from coming to blows as well as for humanitarian odd jobs.
A Western military expert remarked to DEBKAfile that the European naval forces cruising off Lebanese shores are roughly ten times as much as the UNIFIL contingents require as cover, especially when UNIFIL’s duties are strictly non-combat. After all, none of the UN contingents will be engaged in disarming Hizballah or blocking the flow of weapons incoming from Syria and Iran.
So, if not for Lebanon, what is this fine array of naval power really there for?
First, according to our military sources, the European participants feel the need of a strong naval presence in the eastern Mediterranean to prevent a possible Iranian-US-Israeli war igniting an Iranian long-range Shahab missile attack on Europe; second, as a deterrent to dissuade Syria and Hizballah from opening a second front against American and Israel from their eastern Mediterranean coasts.
Numbers alone do not do justice to the immense operational capabilities and firepower amassed opposite Lebanon. Take first the three fleet flagships.
From France’s nuclear-powered 38,000-ton Charles De Gaulle carrier, 40 Rafale M fighter craft whose range is 3,340 km can take off at intervals of 30 seconds. The ship also carries three E-2C Hawkeye surveillance craft. The combat control center of the French carrier can handle 2,000 simultaneous targets. The carrier leads a task fore of 7 warships carrying 2,800 French Marines.
Charles De Gaulle s also a floating logistics center operating water desalination plants for 15,000 men and enough food to feed an army for 90 days.
The USS Mount Whitney has the most sophisticated command and control suite in the world. Like the French Charles De Gaulle , it exercises command over a task force of 1,800 sailors, Marines, Air force medical and other personnel serving aboard the USS Barry, the USS Trenton , HSV Swift and USNS Kanawha .
Available to the fleet commander, US Vice Admiral J. “Boomer” Stufflebeem, formally titled commander of Joint Task Force Lebanon, is the uniquely advanced C41 command and intelligence system through which he can flash intelligence data to every American commander at any point between the eastern Mediterranean and the Persian Gulf and Iran. USS Mount Whitney communications are described as unsurpassed for the the secure transmission of data from any point to any other point in the world through HF, UHF,VHF, SHF and EHF.
The third carrier joining the other two is the Italian aircraft-helicopter carrier Garibaldi , which has launch pads for vertical takeoff by 16 AV-8B Harrier fighter-bombers or 18 Sikorsky SH-3D Seak King sea-choppers (or Italian Agusta Bell AB212 helicopters), designed to attack submarines and missile ships.
Military experts estimate that the Garibaldi currently carries 10 fighter planes and 6 helicopters.
The new European naval concentration tops up the forces which permanently crowd the eastern Mediterranean: the Italian-based American Sixth Fleet, some 15 small Israeli missile ships and half a dozen submarines and the NATO fleet of Canadian, British, Dutch, German, Spanish, Greek and Turkish warships. They are on patrol against al Qaeda (which is estimated to deploy 45 small freighters in the Mediterranean and Indian Ocean). The British have permanent air and sea bases in Cyprus.
This vast force’s main weakness, according to DEBKAfile’s military sources, is that it lacks a single unified command. A sudden flare-up in Lebanon, Syria or Iran could throw the entire force into confusion.
On paper, it has three commanders:
1. French General Alain Pellegrini is the commander of the expanded UNIFIL ground, naval and air force in Lebanon. In February 2007, he hands over to an Italian general who leads the largest of the European contingents of 3,000 men. It is hard to see France agreeing to place its prestigious Charles De Gaulle flagship under non-French command.
2. The American forces opposite Lebanese shores are under direct US command. Since the October 1993 debacle of an American peace force under the UN flag in Somalia, Washington has never again placed its military under UN command. (There is no American contingent in the UNIFIL ground force either.)
In other words, USS Mount Whitney , while serving the European fleets as their operational and intelligence nerve center will stay under the sole command of Vice Admiral Stufflebeem in all possible contingencies.
3. Similarly, the NATO fleet will remain under NATO command, and Israel’s air and naval units will take their orders from Israeli Navy Headquarters in Haifa and the General Staff in Tel Aviv.
The naval Babel piling up in the eastern Mediterranean may therefore find itself at cross purposes when action is needed in an armed conflict. Iran, Syria and Hizballah could be counting on this weakness as a tactical asset in their favor.

France capitulates even before they got to Lebanon

The UN agreed to throw in 15,000 unidentified troops to do something, anything.
The French thought they had to do what the UN did for 28 years - look the other way.
France seamlessly reassumed its imperial role and offers to lead the UN troops until it is suggested that they are the only force available to disarm hisbollah, at which stage France surrenders.

PARIS, Aug. 20 — The shaky, United Nations-brokered cease-fire in Lebanon suffered another blow on Sunday when France that had been called upon to provide the backbone of a peacekeeping force delayed a decision on committing troops until the mission is more clearly defined ... Is British foreign policy fuelling extremism?
Up to now, religious leaders have been blaming British foreign policy, supposedly explaining why part of their community is trying to kill innocent people.
Well, in England, to get policies changed, people vote.
They've also complained that this latest bomb scare will shed a bad light upon their community.
But, have they distanced themselves from those would-be mass-murderers?
Hmm… No.
What are the British people suppose to think and fell after that?

British Muslim groups have called for "urgent" changes to UK foreign policy in an open letter to Prime Minister Tony Blair.
The letter says Britain's stance puts civilians at increased risk both in the UK and abroad. Muslim MPs, peers and community leaders say the prime minister's policies in the Middle East and Iraq have given "ammunition to extremists".
Downing Street says the Prime Minister would be ready to meet representatives of the groups who signed the letter, when he returns to the UK.
So the BBC asks the following on it's web site:

Muslims in denial
There was the imminent terror plot by young, British-born Asian men to blow up planes at a massive scale.
There was 7/7.
There are young, British-born Asian men going off to fight on behalf of Hizbollah. There were young, British-born Asian men going off to fight in Iraq.
There were young, British-born Asian men going off to Afghanistan
First question that comes up to my mind is:
Why?
Don’t quote me, but I heard that some of the people involved are muslim.

And those who just want a safer world are those who are willing to call the threat what it is.

un détail significatif.
Sur 18 photos de Reuters à propos de la guerre au Liban nous avons “the same pattern”.
Quand un Israélien est la victime, il l’a été atteint par une roquette;
quand un Libanais l’est, il s’agit d’un “raïd israélien” ou bien d’un “bombardement israélien, mais non pas d’un “missile” ou d’un “projectile”.

To make this very clear,
if the IDF fires back at this man, tomorrow's news will report:
Israel kills Militant and Five Civilian Bystanders, including three children.
And people will read that and condemn Israel for being careless, if not intentional, for killing innocents, especially children.
People will concede Israel should fight the terrorists in theory, but declare they are doing it all wrong if they kill that many innocents.
Remember this photograph the next time you read civilians were killed along side "resistants".

Premières leçons de la nouvelle guerre du Liban
(...)Nombre de médias français ont persévéré avec perversité dans leur couverture biaisée et incompétente de la guerre. D'interminables reportages filmés et écrits ont présenté et dénoncé les bombardements israéliens, les ruines libanaises, la détresse des populations libanaises fuyant l'agression de Tsahal. On a dépassé les pires moments des cinq années de Guerre des Hommes-Bombes. Les motivations d'Israël, les dommages causés en Israël par l'agression du Hezbollah, les morts et les blessés israéliens ont été pratiquement ignorés.
Exemple entre mille : la guerre des camions.
Le 18 juillet, l'aviation repère et bombarde deux camions venant de Syrie et chargés de missiles. Un drone les avait observés en chargement sur une base syrienne. Ils ont été touchés en territoire libanais.
Mais une télévision montre un camion "chargé de denrées" en train de brûler. Une autre chaîne parle de la chasse aux camions chargés de "médicaments".
Simultanément, on fait état de l'habituelle "catastrophe humanitaire". Qu'en conclura le téléspectateur ?
Des civils innocents ?
Toutes les télévisions, toute la presse écrite ont montré en permanence les ruines des "quartiers civils", des "maisons habitées par des civils" notamment à Beyrouth

Elles ont évité le reste de la ville pour ne pas filmer la réalité, la vérité : une vie de tous les jours imperturbée, des rues animées .
Les caméras ont perversement montré les familles libanaises du Nord du pays, accueillant leurs parents du Sud ayant fui les fiefs du Hezbollah, venues se réfugier chez elles.
Les caméras ont évité de filmer les familles du Nord d'Israël, écrasées par les roquettes, venues se réfugier plus au Sud auprès de leurs parents et amis du Sud.
Les caméras ont filmé les rares Israéliens isolés (souvent des Arabes d'Israël) promenant des slogans pacifistes et des drapeaux de l'OLP dans les rues.
Elles n'ont pas cherché à montrer par l'image le sentiment d'unanimité nationale. (...)

Exemple entre mille : la guerre des camions.
Le 18 juillet, l'aviation repère et bombarde deux camions venant de Syrie et chargés de missiles. Un drone les avait observés en chargement sur une base syrienne. Ils ont été touchés en territoire libanais.
Mais une télévision montre un camion "chargé de denrées" en train de brûler. Une autre chaîne parle de la chasse aux camions chargés de "médicaments".
Simultanément, on fait état de l'habituelle "catastrophe humanitaire". Qu'en conclura le téléspectateur ?

Toutes les télévisions, toute la presse écrite ont montré en permanence les ruines des "quartiers civils", des "maisons habitées par des civils" notamment à Beyrouth

This looks more like rockets being launched than ones falling. That's based on the videos I've seen of Hezbollah rocket launches.
Reuters seems to agree.

Notice also the credit for the two pictures goes to two different photographers but they look like the exact same photo to me. One just has the buildings in the foreground cropped out. Was that done to disguise the fact that they are the same photo.Notice the AFP photo has what looks like fire at what would be the site of "impact" or, as in the case of Reuters version, the launch site. Did AFP add some fire to make it look like rockets landing?

(IsraelNN.com) The day after it was revealed that a Reuters News Agency doctored photographs to show an anti-Israel bias, the news service incorrectly reported Tuesday afternoon that the IDF bombed a funeral procession in Lebanon.Reuters has corrected without apology its earlier story that the IDF strafed a funeral procession and updated the report to state that the bombs struck a village at the same time the funeral was taking place, adding that "the air strike was not in the immediate vicinity of the funeral."

The international media’s bias against Israel on display
Kevin & Gregg, co-hosts over at Pundit Review Radio deconstruct several examples of blatant media bias against Israel (too bad Reuters' pics can't talk, hmm).
Here are two examples of stunning media bias in the coverage of the Hezbollah-Israeli war.
These are montages of the questions asked during interviews with Israeli government representatives. The first clip is by BBC and the other from CNN. In both cases, the anchors are regurgitating Hezbollah talking points fast and furious, claiming their “primitive” rockets can inflict very little damage. The interviews are 100% focused on Israel’s crimes against the innocent people of Lebanon. Of course, they offer not one second of attention to civilian casualties on the Israeli side. Apparently, only Lebanese civilians are under attack.
We then play a very compelling clip of a Podcast from recent guest, citizen journalist Dave Bender, an Israeli-based blogger whose site is Israel at Level Ground.
As Dave and the residents of Haifa know, Israeli citizens are under attack. Too bad the BBC and CNN can’t come to term with this. This is a great piece of citizen journalism by Dave Bender, and when put side-by-side with the international media’s work, it is really telling.The full interview is here.
